Garden hotel is the best hotel for my Shanxi trip. Excellent location within most of the tourist sites in the old city. Great Chinese restaurant in the hotel serving a wide variety of delicious meal that I ate all my dinners there. The breakfast served is also very good with freshly made ground coffee and fresh ingredients and a wide variety of choices. Great service overall. They helped me booked a taxi for the whole day to Hengshan for only 300 yuan which is cheaper than if I booked it myself with the taxi driver. It also has a good massage center for my tired legs after the hiking up the mountains. The room is clean and large with wonderful facilities in the room. Overall, a great choice for visiting Datong and I would like to stay here in future too. The front office also accept foreign credit card although their other services did not. Thank you for such a wonderful place. Keep up the good service.

We are a couple who stayed here for 3 nights, from 27-30 October. We were very pleased with the hotel. It is a nice 4 star hotel and very well priced, making it great value. It is very well located, almost in the middle of the walled Ancient City and in walking distance of everything in the Ancient City. Our room was large, comfortable, with stylish decorations, a large king size bed, a sofa, a desk, a seating area spanning the bottom of the bed, TV with CNN, a nice bathroom, detergent for washing and a line for drying your laundry. The breakfast is varied and fine, though the pastries and muffins inexplicably were always quite dry. There is a sauna downstairs, with separate male and female sections. It is reminiscent of a Japanese bath house: small stools to sit on while scrubbing before bathing, then two pools (warm and very hot water respectively) to soak in, plus attendants who do body and feet massages. Suprisingly, 2 Chinese men smoked in the pool. The hotel gets China Daily newspaper for public areas, but alas it is 3-4 days old.

Hotel de primera. Las instalaciones perfectas, el desayuno muy completo y variado para gusto oriental y occidental. El personal muy servicial y dispuesto a ayudarte. La habitación amplia y cómoda. La ubicación es adecuada a un paso de la Torre del Tambor y en una avenida principal. Sin duda lo recomiendo, yo volvería a hospedarme en este confortable hotel.

Staff were so helpful in organising day trips for us. The hotel is also great value for the money paid. Clean, comfortable and everything was functional. Breakfast has a good variety of food.

The best hotel I stayed in China. Clean, comfortable, well located and the service was fantastic. Really good breakfast included. The from desk girls spoke good English and we very helpful. It’s inside the ancient city and close to many sightseeings. Also close to many restaurants and stores. Unfortunately we just spent two nights. We left wanting to come back. I got a fantastic massage there and they arranged a taxi driver to take us to the Yungang Grottoes and airport for a decent price. I just have good things to say about this hotel. It’s the only real 4 star hotel I stayed in China. Don’t think twice about book there. It’s totally worth it!

LOCATION — perfectly situated within the walled “old town” and just a couple of blocks from many spectacular historic must-see sites and temples (complexes of temples actually).ROOM — beautifully appointed with pretty, elegant furnishings. Thoughtful details such as desktop humidifier, heated toilet seat, turndown service were welcomed on frigid winter days. Exhaustive bathroom toiletries provided. BREAKFAST — exquisite buffet loaded with ample fresh and steamed vegetable dishes, fruits, an array of western choices and an amazing “soup chef” for lack of better term. Not only was the soup bursting with flavor, but it also contained thin handmade noodles. One of the best things I’ve eaten during two weeks in China.RESTAURANT — fresh, exotic to this western gal, but clearly high end with lovely helpful staff. Visually very pleasing. Patrons included business men engaged in jovial conversation, happy family gatherings, and hotel guests. STAFF — all exceptionally friendly and helpful, especially the business center manager who ensured that I had a top notch private driver take me to distant tourist attractions (hanging temple and the grottoes) for a fraction of organized tours I’ve seen on Trip Advisor. Aside from the business manager, I was hard pressed to find English speakers here, but an iPhone app can quickly bridge that gap.LOBBY — lovelyQUALITY - by far the best experience yet in China! I’d just recommend coming in warmer weather.

Very good hotel located within the walls of the old city of Datong. Within short walking distance of all the main city sites such as the drum pagoda and nine dragon screen. Caves are a short taxi/bus ride away. Friendly staff though their English is limited. Brazilian BBQ buffet is a must! Spacious rooms with large beds and TVs

Datong ist eine Stadt zwischen Tradition und deren Wiederfindung. Das Hotel ist perfekt gelegen, um die Altstadt zu erkunden. Uns wurde auch ein Fahrer vermittelt, der uns auf einer Tagesfahrt sicher und freundlich zu den verschiedenen Sehenswürdigkeiten in der Region gebracht hat. Das Personal ist sehr hilfsbereit und man bemüht sich, besten Service zu bieten. Das Zimmer hatte ein hervorragendes großes Bett und war sehr ruhig. Wir können das Hotel bestens empfehlen.

I cant say enough about the garden hotel. When we first got to the room we were amazed at how nice the room was, a room like that in Vancouver Canada would of been around $300 a night. The toilet seat was heated which was incredible lol. The hotel staff set us up with a taxi driver who spoke English and brought us to the hanging temple and the grottoes. He was amazing and like a tour guide, but at the price of a cheap taxi ride. I cant remember his name, but say th Canadian couple had him in February. The staff also invited us out to the spring festival and got us into the city wall for free with the staff. This made Datong a must see and I totally recommend staying here if you dont speak Chinese as other hotels are a little harder to get help for an English tourist. The only bad thing I can say is that they set our standards too high lol. The next hotels have been a 5 star and a 4 star and they dont compare to how good the garden hotel was at all. I just want to go back to Datong now. Oh yeah and the breakfast buffet was great as well and room service was cheap and the Black Forest cake was delicious.

Our room was clean, nice and quiet. The staff was very helpful, courteous and professional. They helped arrange transportation for our entire stay. Breakfast was also very good with a nice selection of food. Would definitely stay here again.

I traveled quite a lot in China, and this is the only local brand have excellent breakfast. They also can help you arrange rent car. Just a block there is an excellent Chinese restaurant, we had 2 dinners there!

We were here last year for a couple of nights while visiting the hanging mountain but did not make it to Yungang Grottoes due to the weather. So we came back n stayed at Garden hotel again as service，breakfast and location is good. Room is clean as well, possibly one of the better hotels in Datong.

What an amazing hotel experience! So close to many of the ancient city attractions, and the amenities and service are hard to beat. The bath house in the basement is available to all guests, which was very relaxing after I worked out in their aptly equipped gym. We sadly had to leave early in the morning before they served their apparently famous breakfasts, but they even prepared small to-go boxes for us to take in the morning before their kitchen fully opened.I loved this stay and would highly recommend it to any other travelers to Datong!

We can highly recommend Garden Hotel and would definitely book again!The hotel is well-located in the center of ancient Datong (although the center itself does not offer many sights). Close proximity to the main station (max. 15 mins by cab). We arrived in the early morning (around 6:30 am) and thus our room was not ready yet (which was well-communicated by them in advance). However, they offered us another room to rest until the booked room was cleaned-up. Very polite and friendly staff. Although their English is sometimes a bit bumpy, there is always at least one person that speaks English very well.We booked a driver to the hanging temples via the hotel at a very fair price. Ask for Mr. Liu, who is probably the best driver in Datong and was one of the most friendly persons we met during our trip through China.Breakfast was very good and rich, comprising western and Chinese food, e.g. freshly maked omelettes and Baozi. Room was large, clean and very well-equipped.

First off, a couple of minor negatives - firstly, the building is showing its age and isnt the most modern, secondly, the atrium in the centre of the hotel echoes and so music from the restaurant on ground floor can be heard in the rooms in the evenings - that aside, I really enjoyed my stay at the Garden Hotel. The service is really fantastic and staff go out of their way to be helpful, even when their English is not so great, which creates a really welcoming/homely vibe. The Business Centre helped arrange a private car to the Yungang Grottoes and Hanging Monastry for a pretty reasonable price, which made life a lot easier. The hotel is also in the perfect location for the main sights in Datong City itself, just 5-10 minutes walk away - likewise, it is a similar distance from Fengling Ge restaurant, which is an absolute MUST visit when in town (ask the hotel to make reservations during high season). Highly recommended.

Friendly reception, rooms are dated but clean, comfortable beds, would’ve been nice if the breakfast buffet were ***aged better (I.e. have the wait staff monitor if food is running low and have it refilled instead of just leaving them empty until some guests complain)

This is a centrally located hotel within the old town. The hotel and the room are clean. I particularly like the smart toilet which includes bidet.

I had a complaint about the air con, it was hot inside the room in spring, a lady knocked the door, she stepped in, without a word, went to the thermostat, turned it off, went to the windows, opened them, said “Ok?”and left. Later, reception admitted that it was not working and no attempt to remedy it. I wasn’t going to stay there longer so I let it go, we have a good laugh after. Only some employees can speak English, location is in old town (nice). 60 yuan or 45 minutes to airport and 25 to train station.

Staying at the Garden was a wonderful experience on all counts meeting the highest expectations.The location is most convenient The buffet breakfast outstanding, the choice and quality of food was exceptional and the same can be said of dinners at the restaurant.The service was friendly,courteous and efficient.
