I can not more highly recommend Shirouma So!The staff were very accommodating and friendly. The hotel was very comfortable and perfectly situated near the bus terminal, Happo One, and restaurants. The onsen was the perfect way to finish a day on the slopes. The food was excellent and there was plenty of variety - while breakfast is set, it is different every day.I would definitely stay here again!

Very friendly and helpful staff, better English than I expected. More or less traditional ryokan, with tatami floors. The room is spacious during the day when the futons are rolled up (the staff does that for you), and the futons are very comfortable to sleep on. Breakfast included in the price of the room was excellent. Dinner was extra, but not expensive--about $25 for a first-class, elegant Japanese dinner.The staff were very helpful, even picking us up at the bus terminal (much appreciated after a 16-hour journey) and dropping us off at the train station. Everything about this ryokan is first class, and we would stay again any time.

This was our first trip to Japan and our first time staying in a traditional Japanese Ryokan. We will be back. Loved it. Its family-owned - Toshi and his family were very welcoming, spoke good English, had loads of local knowledge to help us out and had traditional breakfasts and dinners on offer (cooked by Toshis mother, who comes out and greets everyone at meal time - FYI: you need to book the day before for dinners). We were warm, comfortable (futons were fairly firm but we slept pretty well!), and well looked after. Location is great. Cant wait to come back and stay for longer.

Thank you very much for yr great services and cares. The room was very clean and the hotel staff would lay our bedding out on the tatami mats when we went to dinner. A shuttle bus to the ski runs stopped within walking distance from the Ryokan. A really enjoyable experience.

This is a once in a life time experience to stay at this beautiful Ryokan run by a local family for over 80 years. The traditional room we had was large and beautiful, with the view of the mountains. Staff members are all helpful and made us feel at home. Toshi the proprietor helped us with travel plans back to Tokyo. A driver from the hotel drove us to and from the train station so we could re-arrange our train trip with the station staff. We had breakfast at the intimate hotel restaurant. Both Japanese and western dishes are served. The quality of the food is excellent.

Absolutely perfect!!! We loved this place. The innkeepers are super nice and helpful. Very humble family. I was worried about sleeping on the tatami and mats on the floor, it turned out to me more comfortable than regular beds and mattresses. We slept very well. Hot springs bathhouse inside hotel was super nice, luxurious and clean. Love it! Highly recommend

This is a FANTASTIC hotel, we stayed for just 2 nights, but wished we could have stayed longer. I dont usually rate hotels on any site, actually this is my first ever rating. But it deserves a 5 star rating. Very helpful, delicious food, warm cosy room, super clean, all in all a top place.

We had a week at this great Ryokan. It is built in a traditional style, but everything was in immaculate condition. The position was great and within walking distance to the Happo ski field, and even closer to the bus station for transfers to the other ski fields and the bus back to Nagano. There are dozens of restaurants near bye, but if you dont want to wait, then book a day in advance. The onsen at the ryokan was small, but relaxing. We had breakfast there daily, and it was delicious. There was a coffee machine, juice and toast, a hot dish as well as rice and soup. The owner, Toshi, was very friendly, gave advice about where to ski and had good English. Ask him about the coupons which give you an included lunch with the ski lift passes at some resorts. He can also sell you discounted tickets to Happo. His mother did the cooking and came out from the kitchen to say good morning in Japanese.

My stays at this hotel have always been a very fun and positive experience. The location is excellent,walking distance to the Happo bus station. The rooms are traditional japanese style with tatami mats and futons. The staff here went out of their way to make our lives easy.

Great place for a couple. The owners and staff are so hospitable and very welcoming. Breakfasts were amazing Japanese feasts and we had dinner in on a couple of occasions. Breakfast was always perfectly setup and ready in the mornings. Food was amazing and the chef likes to come and say hello at each meal which is lovely.

We only went to the restaurant as a treat and wow it did not disappoint. We had breakfast included in our room rate, and there was a very good selection of Japanese and western foods prepared fresh every morning. Wed absolutely stay here again and highly recommend it to visitors.

Very comfortable stay and very good services from the staff! We stayed in a room with mountain view and the view was majestic and wonderful. When we were leaving, the hotel keeper even drove us to the train station and helped us arrange our train tickets before he left us. Very satisfied with every bit of this hotel!

The hotel is definitely a comfortable and relaxing place to stay. Onsen facility was great after a day of skiing. Great for families and English speaking staff. The breakfasts were amazing with a multitude of Japanese dishes and having the onsen onsite was a wonderful way to end a day of skiing.

The yukatas provided by the ryokan were lovely: heavy cotton with classic Japanese designs in navy and white. Staff were really helpful. Toshi is the ***ager and speaks excellent English. At the end of the day however this ryokan is the consummate Japanese experience and a lovely place to stay.

It is a lovely, elegant ryokan with a beautiful onsen and very nice and helpful staff. The dinner was very delicious and absolutely worth the money. Unfortunately, we stayed only one night. If we were to come back to this part of Japan, we would definitely stay in this ryokan. It has our highest recommendation.

The added bonus is that Toshi San is expert in reading the weather and the mountain and will recommend where the best locations for the condition of the whole Hakuba area are likely to be found. The food from their restaurant was amazing. Fabulous several course meal for very reasonable prices. We will be back.

We were made to feel like 6 star guests. Proximity to ski facilities was just 10 mins walk away. Kaiseke and breakfast was way above average. Since there is little else to do but ski and stay in the hotel, it made a huge difference that it was marvellous. I will make a trip back next time Im in Japan.

First and foremost the staff, led by a gentleman named Toshi, was incredible. So friendly and helpful. The food which was mostly traditional, was delicious!They offer discounted lift tickets and a discount at a nearby rental shop as well (which was also very friendly and helpful). They allow private access to their onsen, which is great for couples.The room was a great size, and we thoroughly enjoyed the ryokan experience.

I havent tried all the hotels/ryokans in hakuba so i cant tell you which is the best but Shirouma-so is great. I could go on and on but this place is seriously prime. The breakfast was excellent consisting of a number of Japanese dishes which varies from day to day.

My partner and I had the pleasure of staying in an ensuite room at this lovely and traditional Japanese hotel. I found the staff at this hotel to be particularly helpful and friendly. Relaxing in the onsen at the end of the day is sheer bliss and the food is truly amazing.

What a fun and unique experience to stay in a Japanese style hotel. Every morning our group was treated to a wonderful traditional Japanese breakfast, lovingly prepared by Toshis mother. Toshi is a wonderful host and even rushed us to the bus stop so we could catch the bus back to Nagano.

Everything you need is within a short walking distance to the ryokan. Its located just up the road from the Hakuba train station with a bus service that takes you the 1km distance to the Happo bus stop and visitor centre. Everywhere in the ryokan was extremely clean and tidy. We cant wait to go back.

Spend 7 nights at the Japanese Hotel and it was a very nice stay. I came with my daughter and thought the service was excellent and the breakfasts also excellent. My daughter did not like the beds (traditional Japanese) as she thought they were too hard. Otherwise difficult to find any problems.

The hotel was in a great location. Feels like a old Japanese hotel with the modern amenities. Breakfast was a great deal and dinner looked nice. Would go back again.
